SOX TAKE SECOND FROM ANGELS
Boston RS 4
Anahein Angels 2

Solid start from Pedro, decent releif work and some clutch hits. These are my favorite types of wins.

The Man of the Game is Gabe Kapler who had an insurance homerun and made a sensational play in left field in the place of Manny.

PEDROPHILE RETURNS!
After more computer difficulties and wireless network setup stuff and SpyWare removal and crap like that I have cleaned up one of my houses computers and so I’m able to update my blog with a boatload of game summaries and news from the other teams and my own unique and 200% correct opinions on the team and stuff like that. If I get my wireless network up and running then maybe my movie review blog will finally go up and I can upload more of my college pictures to my picture site.

SOX AND MARINERS SPLIT REMAINDER OF MAY SERIES
I left off with the opener of the series so I begin this post with the remainder

The Man of the Game for the Saturday game is Manny Ramirez, he went 2 for 3 with a homerun and he also walked.

The Bitch-Goat for the Saturday game shall be divided thusly:
Wakefield: 0.5 – only Sox pitcher to give up runs, also had an error
Damon: 0.2 – 0 for 5, 2 Ks, 2 LOB
Youkilis: 0.1 – 0 for 4, 2 LOB
Varitek: 0.1 – 0 for 2, LOB
Ortiz: 0.1 – 1 for 5, 2 Ks, 2 LOB

The Man of the Game for the Sunday game is Anastacio Martinez who pitched the 11th and 12th and allowed only one baserunner on a walk. He kept the game tied which allowed McCarty to win it.

SOX GET BLOWN OUT BY O’S IN MAKEUP GAME
If it weren’t for this makeup game, the Sox would have had 9 straight Mondays off. That’s ridiculous, the computer that generates the schedule needs to have something to prevent long streaks of Mondays or Thursdays off.

O’s 1s
Sox 4

The Man of the Game is Melvin Mora who went 3 for 6, had a homerun, and knocked in 4 runs.

The Bitch-Goat shall be divided thusly:

Embree: 0.1 – couldn’t hold the score at where it was
Reese: 0.2 – 0 for 3, 3 Ks, 3 LOB

The Man of the Game for game 2 is Vlad “The Impaler.” He went 4 for 4 with a pair of homers, a double, and knocked in 9 of Anaheim’s 10 runs. He had one of the best offensive performances I’ve ever seen right up there with Nomar’s 10 RBI night and Bill Mueller’s double grand slam night in Texas last year.

The Bitch-Goat shall be divided thusly:
Martinez: 0.7 – 7 ERs in 5 IP
Timlin: 0.3 – blown save, 3 ERs

Millar: 0.1 – 0 for 4
Reese: 0.1 – 0 for 2

The Man of the Game for game 2 is Mark Bellhorn. He went 2 for 4 with a homer, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

The Man of the Game for game 3 is Mike Timlin who came up huge with 3 perfect innings in relief of Derek Lowe.

SOX TAKE 2 FROM PADRES
SD Padres 11
Boston RS 11

The Man of the Game for game 1 is Pedro Martinez who rebounded from a terrible start to throw an absolute gem. 8 innings pitched, 2 hits allowed (a single and a double), no runs allowed, a walk, and 8 Ks. Absolutely magnificent in a classic 1-0 pitcher’s duel.

Dominique: 0.2 – 0 for 4, K, 4 LOB

The MOTG for game 3 is Pokey Reese who went 3 for 4 with 3 runs, a HR, and an RBI

SOX TAKE 2 FROM DODGERS
LA Dodgers 16
Boston RS 11

The MOTG for game 1 is D-Lowe who went 7 scoreless with 4 Ks and 12 groundball outs.

The MOTG for game 2 is Olmedo Saenz who went 2 for 3, with a walk, a HR, 4 RBI and a pair of runs scored

SOX LOSE 4 ON NL WEST ROAD TRIP
Boston RS 38
NL West 32

Notice how we scored more than our opponent on the west coast swing but we only won 2 of 6 games. We averaged 6.333 runs per game which would result in a season total of 1,026 runs. According to Bill James, the magical number of runs is 960 (5.926 per game) in order to win something like 95 or 96 games. The problem with this theory is (to paraphrase The Fast and the Furious) that it doesn’t matter if you win by 10 runs or 1. Theoretically, a team could score only 162 runs and go 162-0. Furthermore a team could score 1,000,000 runs in a season and go 0-162. This road trip was a prime example of the flaws in the Red Sox strategy. Unlike the statistical wizards of baseball would like to believe, each and every game of baseball played is different and has different nuances which should make the way a manager and his players alter their approach to the game based on the game they’re playing that day/night. I know it’s a different sport but the main reason, in my mind, that the Sox won the Super Bowl last year and 3 years ago is that they were able to alter their strategy and mindset based on the game they had to play that week.

The MOTGs for the six game trip are:
1: Vinny “Still Kicking” Castilla – 3 for 4, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI
2: Kevin Youkilis – 3 for 4, HR, BB, 2 R, 2 RBI
3: D-Lowe: 7 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 3 Ks, 17 groundball outs (1 flyout)
4: Ortiz: 3 for 6, HR, 4 RBI, R
5: Kapler: 2 for 3, 2B, BB, RBI, R
6: Schmidt: 9 IP, H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 Ks

The Bitch-Goats

SOX STRUGGLE AGAINST TWINKIES

SCUM SWEEP SOX
Boston 9
New York 20

This series saw a blowout, a Red Sox choke and then one of the best games of all-time. Even though this series came at the outset of a grueling road trip and the Sox got swept and outscored 2:1 in the series, the final two games were very close and easily could have been won by the Sox.

MOTGs:
Game 1: Tony Clark: 2 for 4, R, 3 RBI

Game 3: Jorge Posada: 2 for 4, 2B, HR, 2 BB, RBI, 2 R

SOX SWEEP CHOKELAND
Oakland 10
Boston 29

This series was a very important series. We kicked off the homestand with a nice sweep of a wild card competitor.

Men of the Game:
Game 1: Johnny Damon: 5 for 6, 2 runs
Game 2: Nomar: 2 for 4, HR, 2B, 2 R, RBI
Game 3: Ortiz: 3 for 5, HR, 2B, 3 R, RBI

McCarty: 0.2 – 0 for 4, 2 Ks, 3 LOB, Error

SOX LOSE OPENER OF SECOND HALF
Boston Red Sox 1
Anahymen Angels 8

So the Sox rebounded after a tough 1-5 road trip before the break with a 5-1 homestand. But they’ve been good at home all season. This short west coast swing against the Angels and M’s then a 6 game homestand in 5 days with 3 against New York and 3 against Baltimore mixed in with a doubleheader against Baltimore.

The Man of the Game is David Eckstein who went 3 for 5 with a Run and an RBI. He also had a double. He is definitely the spark plug of that team. As much as I like Reese’s defense and the offense brought by Walker last year and Bellhorn this year, I wish we never got rid of Eckstein and he was playing second base for us. We wouldn’t have had to spend $8M on Johnny Damon for a leadoff hitter nor would we have to sacrifice defense for offense or vice versa.

The Bitch-Goat shall be divided thusly:
Lowe: 0.5 – 4.2 IP, 9 H, 4 ER,
Embree: 0.3 – 0.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER
Millar: 0.2 - 2 Ks, mistake in the OF, terrible throw to the plate

That’s it for now.
